Volunteering at the Kid’s Day Pancake Stampede Breakfast, down at the Stampede Grounds is a lot of fun!  Sign up in May or June and take your sweetie (or as you can see, just a friend) down to work for a good cause.  Everyone has fun and you get to meet 30,000 new friends. I couldn’t bring my sweetie because he had to work, but I found a new friend!

If you are looking for really unique date night ideas, check out the Fast Forward magazine and Swerve magazine for up-to-the-minute really cool date ideas.  We went to Wreck City last weekend.  It is a city block in Kensington that was slated for demolition and the arts community let loose and turned the houses into sculpture and 3d art.  Very exceptional.

Segway Tour of Downtown Calgary

Partner surprised me this summer when we drove downtown for our date.  Along Eau Claire is a tiny booth that will teach you how to handle a Segway and take you for a tour along East Village.  The tour dude was a kind young man who told us all about the history of downtown Calgary.  He did such a good job, I didn’t have the heart to tell him that I grew up here.  The package includes 30 minutes of safety and Segway training, and a 30 minute tour along the river.  You can extend the tour 30 minutes which we did.  A great view and a great workout – of your fingers!

Biking Around Glenmore Reservoir

A beautiful full moon and a reservoir is the foundation for a biking date.  Fall and summer is the best time to do the 3 km loop around the Glenmore Reservoir.  Start and park at Heritage Park for free (where you will often see a public wedding in the main plaza) and go the whole loop.  You can go for a well-deserved beer after at the Selkirk Grille or the Point and Feather. The Point and Feather has free live music!

A white sheet goes a long way to an outdoor theatre experience.  Cook up the Jiffy Pop over a campstove, hang a white sheet between two trees, and hook up the generator, laptop, ipad and projector, and you can watch movies in the great outdoors.  The best part is that it gets cold, and then you have to snuggle!

Not only is volunteering a great way to spend a date, or meet a date (we met at the Distress Centre) but you get to take your partner out for dinner free when the organization appreciates you!  This happens usually in Spring or Christmas time.  Volunteering has always been in our blood, and this year our favourite organization is the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank.

June is the best time to go to the theatre and watch Ed McNally’s (yes, that’s the same beer guy) Big Rock Eddies Awards celebrating the best of homemade print and video Beer ads.  The show takes place the first week of June, so be sure to buy tickets as soon as they are available as they sell out quick.  And best of all, you get beer tickets to enjoy Big Rock while waiting in the lobby.

After the Eddies, take a walk outside downtown on a warm June night and you will feel glad you are alive!
